Designing for Dreamy Nights, Brooke Ritchie's Guide to transforming your bedroom for your best night's sleep

Let’s be real—who doesn’t crave a good night’s sleep? It’s the ultimate luxury we all dream of, yet it often gets pushed to the bottom of our to-do lists. But here’s the thing: sleep is non-negotiable for our well-being, and the right bedroom setup could be the game-changer you’ve been missing.

In celebration of World Sleep Day, we caught up with Brooke Ritchie who is a mother, interior designer, influencer and dabbler in many fields. Brooke takes a moment out of her day to share with us her top tips on how she makes sleep a health priority through interior design.

It’s time to rethink your bedroom as more than just a place to sleep.

Why do you believe sleep and design go hand in hand, and how can the right bedroom setup impact overall sleep quality?

100% linen sheets are my favourite pick. Quality is everything and can impact the perfect nights sleep. For example.. itchy crusty sheets aren't pleasant to sleep in therefor it can definitely impact your overall sleep at night. Styling bedrooms are one of my favourite things. Usually, when the bedroom comes to mind, it's like a sanctuary, most people see them as their safe places, their go too after a long days work, therefor making this space not only appealing but comfortable is a massive factor in styling a bedroom.

When it comes to bedding, what are your go-to fabrics and textures to boost comfort and improve sleep quality?

Linen, bamboo cotton are my two top picks. I've used pure linen for around 10 years but also love to odd soft bamboo cotton sheets here and there! Colour is a powerful tool in setting the mood of a room.

How do you approach colour selection in bedroom design to encourage relaxation, and are there any shades you personally swear by for sleep spaces?

It all depends on what other furniture, style the bedroom already has. The linen is the cherry on top. Scope the room out, see what other tones are used, whether they work or not, then make your selections based off this.

What are 3 bedroom items that you can't live without?

A comfortable mattress, quality linen and lamps! Designing a beautiful bedroom is one thing, but winding down for the night is just as important.

What does your personal self-care routine look like before bed to ensure a great night’s sleep?

Firstly, kids to bed, then I always like to have the bed ready, lamps on (no big lights) face regime, brush my teeth, then into bed! Always like to have water next to my bed too!

What are some design elements people often overlook that can actually make a big difference in the quality of their sleep?

Pillows! Make sure your pillow is supportive, 100% this can impact your sleep. Also duvets that are too heavy or too light, you need to find the in between that's just right for you!

As a mother of two, you’ve likely had to rethink bedroom design from a functional and aesthetic perspective. What are your key design principles for creating kids' bedrooms that are both dreamy and practical?

Kids bedrooms MUST be fun and colourful. When my eldest Acre was a baby I was a neutral mum through and through. It wasn't appealing to him at all. Kids love colour. If you can tie in colours that work together whilst keeping an aesthetic it's a win win.

I try to keep surfaces minimal yet have bold bedding, rugs and artwork to brighten the space and create a welcoming haven for them.
